UUM ONLINE: Kuala Lumpur – Being on different continents did little to prevent Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) from establishing cooperation with Kaduna State University (KASU), Nigeria, when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was sealed between the two universities.

UUM was represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Dato' Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, while KASU was represented by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Tanko signed the MoU at EDC Hotel Kuala Lumpur, last night.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, UUM ought to establish more cooperation with universities from the African continent for the benefit of both parties.

"We have good bilateral relationship with the country even though the distance between the two countries divides us, but it should not be made into a problem.

He added that although KASU was a relatively new university, the fact was never made into an issue of not establishing cooperation. The thing that mattered was the benefits both parties stood to gain.

He said the MoU also included cooperation in the field of joint research ventures through matching grants, publications, teaching opportunities for academic staff through staff exchange programmes as well as student mobility programmes.

Meanwhile, Prof. Muhammad Tanko said, although small and relatively new, he wanted to put KASU on the world map.

According to him, he was delighted to be able to establish cooperation with UUM, a university that had gained recognition in the international arena.
